2015 Gartner Magic Quadrant

See the trends of Gartner from the past nine years.

The 2015 Gartner Magic Quadrant for BI is out! The report itself is well-worth the read.  The trends that Gartner discusses in the report are familiar: Business users are continuing to demand data discovery and more interactive styles of analytics.

We’re thrilled to have deep partnerships with Magic Quadrant “leaders” Qlik and SAP. In only its third year on the radar of Gartner, Birst is listed as the top “challenger.” Alteryx is in its second year on Gartner’s radar and it is ranked as “visionary.”

As I read this year’s report, I thought it would be interesting to pull up previous reports. I have copies going back to 2007. A couple things struck me as very interesting:

  • The traditional megavendors, SAP (BusinessObjects), IBM (Cognos), Oracle, Microsoft, and SAP have been listed as “leaders” for 8-9 years now. Though they have some great software, I suspect that their continued recognition as “leaders” has a lot to do with sheer size and momentum. Though they are still all listed as leaders, they no longer dominate.
  • Qlik, Tableau, and Tibco were the “challengers” a few years ago (2010-2011). Qlik and Tableau are now clear leaders.
  • Birst and Logi Analytics are the “challengers” today, and we are investing in our Birst practice and expect them to be “leaders” over the next few years.
  • The traditional independents MicroStrategy and Information Builders have stayed in pretty much the same spot on the Magic Quadrant for years (“leaders,” but not the top “leaders”)
  • Our eyes are on a few of the challengers: Yellowfin and Datawatch, specifically.
  • We’ve invested in building a practice with Alteryx, a “visionary” and will be eager to see what Gartner thinks of them in the coming years.

Take a look at the Gartner Magic Quadrants below and let us know what you think of the 9-year trends!
