It can be overwhelming if you aren’t prepared and there’s also a lot you can miss if you don’t know what to look for. Here's some tips to make the most of Qonnections!

So much to learn.
So many people to see and sessions to attend.
So little time.

Between the hundreds of speaker sessions, the many networking and entertainment events, and all the little surprises throughout the conference – a lot is going on at Qonnections. It can be overwhelming if you aren’t prepared and there’s also a lot you can miss if you don’t know what to look for.

With 7 years under our belt of sponsoring and attending Qonnections, we’ve picked up a few tips that may help you navigate the awesomeness that is Qonnections.

Preparing For Qonnections Tips

  • Stop right now and ask yourself: “What do I want to get out of Qonnections?  Why am I spending the time and money away from my job (and family) to attend this conference?” Think of your goals for attending and plan your activities ahead of time out so you get the most out of the event.
  • Research sessions beforehand and pick a variety of topics.
  • Register early for sessions. Many of the good ones fill up quickly. There is a lot of good content... and some that won’t benefit you as much. Don’t be afraid to have a backup plan for the sessions.
  • Review the list of exhibitors beforehand and see what they are all about so you can prioritize who you want to talk to. The expo hall can be crazy, especially if you go during the specified times.
  • Schedule meetings with people you really want to meet beforehand. Make the most of having customers/partners/vendors in one spot and get on their calendars early if there is something specific you want to talk about.

What To Pack & What To Wear Tips

  • Attendees: Dress Comfy.
  • Exhibitors: Dress a step above casual - we have more attire tips for you here.
  • Bring lots of business cards
  • Wear comfortable shoes- the venues is huge and you will be walking a lot.
  • Bring nerd props. We hear that Qonnection’s big customer and partner appreciation event has the theme, “Get Your Geek On” and they’ll have prizes for the best dressed.

During The Conference Tips

  • The night before Qonnections begins, familiarize yourself with the hotel layout. Like we've mentioned already, the hotel is very large.
  • Before your session, check for any last minutes changes to the times and locations.
  • Budget 15 minutes of walking time between sessions.
  • Consider going to the expo center during off hours to talk to the vendors you planned on having a conversation with. It’s way less crowded and the vendors who are there will have more time to talk with you.
NOTE: Keep in mind that not all the vendors will be available during that time.
  • Even if you go to the expo center during off hours to talk to specific vendors, make sure to walk the entire exhibitor floor at some point. There are many products that you should know about or partners that you didn't know about.
  • Always ask people you meet for their business card. Then jot down notes about them on the back so you don’t forget. You will meet a lot of people and it’s easy to lose track of them all.
  • Get on social media with the hashtag, #Qonnections! You’d be surprised how many people you can engage with online and then meet in person. You'll interct with other conference goers, learn about what others are learning, get communication from Qlik about the conference, and see special offers that exhibitors have for you at their booths. You’ll find people taking pictures of different activities or giveaways that you didn’t even know about.
We’ll be posting a lot under these hashtags too: #DataNinja + #HappyMapping. You may or may not see Ninja poses.
  • The food is awesome (make sure to try a lot of it) and the venues are always nice!  Have fun hanging out with coworkers/ customers/ partners somewhere outside of the office.

A Few Tips Directly From Qonnections Veterans

  • “Lunches are open seating.  Take that opportunity to meet new people.”
    – Patrick Vinton, VP Products (and QlikMaps architect)
  • “Make sure to attend as many of the extra activities they have planned as you can- you meet people in surprising ways (like in the early runs or cycling classes they had last year).”
    -Tracey Doyle, VP Marketing
  • A Tip For Other Exhibitors: “Just because we 'compete' with some of the other resellers doesn’t mean we have to avoid them. We should befriend them and learn from each other to beat Tableau, etc.”
    –John Fitzgerald, VP Qlik Practice
